Xiamen’s first “Honor Code Self-help Supermarket” was recently opened at Xiamen University. With no shop assistant, no cashier, and even no cameras, the supermarket allows customers to self-regulate and pay using the honor system.
There are various kinds of goods available for sale in the supermarket, including milk, instant noodles, biscuits, notebooks, and other products that meet student’s needs. The guests, mainly students of Xiamen University, can pick up goods on their own and pay without a cashier, according to the price tags on the items.
According to the university, after over 20 days of trail operations, the supermarket has sold goods totaling about RMB 3,000, and the payment they received was even more than that, with a surplus of RMB 40.
Still, during the second week of the trial operation, there were 3 consecutive days that the supermarket calculated a small deficit, about RMB 10, but the person in charge of the supermarket said they had already foreseen that and that one student may have forgotten to pay for an items or a few students miscalculated an item or two.
